Levelman published an article on Sunday covering the history of the black cowboy. Alaina Roberts, an associate professor in the Dietrich School’s Department of History, was interviewed for the article. Roberts, whose 2021 book “I’ve Been Here All the While: Black Freedom on Native Land,” won multiple awards from the Western History Association, has researched the conflict between historical and pop culture depictions of black cowboys and the westward expansion to Native American land.
