Fine Art Appreciation Day at Pitt: Don’t Brush off the University Art Gallery!

It’s Fine Art Appreciation Day and the Dietrich School has a lot of fine art to offer. No this isn’t a pigment of your imagination, we do have an art museum located on our campus.

Over 150 art exhibitions have been presented at the University Art Gallery, which opened in the late 60s. The UAG is located in the Frick Fine Arts Building, however, the Fine Arts Department at Pitt began in 1927 and was originally housed on the seventh floor of the Cathedral of Learning.

Currently, three exhibitions are on display in the UAG including Rewilding, Joe Magarac Returns, and Broken Ground. All are free for students, faculty, and staff to visit. Over the years the exhibits housed in the Gallery have ranged from borrowed collections to student, both undergraduate and graduate.

Art outside these exhibits can be found in the side hallways of the Gallery, and if you decide to wander downstairs you will find that it’s not so sketchy! Art from current Studio Arts students adorn the hallways and they make you want to grab a brush and jump right into a class! Even if you’re huddled up at home cramming for that exam that is most definitely tomorrow, or in a meeting and you’ve turned your camera off, you can take a break and view one of the UAG online exhibitions.
