Responsibilities of Department Chairs

1. Faculty management

  1. Utilize available faculty as effectively as possible to cover the teaching load of the Department
  2. See that all faculty, including Tenured, Tenure Stream, and Appointment Stream, are appropriately mentored
  3. Encourage faculty research activities
  4. Oversee department’s process for evaluating faculty for promotion and extension of contract
  5. Prepare promotion dossiers and leave requests
  6. Carry out annual performance evaluations and salary reviews of faculty
  7. Oversee evaluation of faculty teaching
  8. Manage faculty recruitment, including long-range planning, diversity and affirmative action processes, and the conduct of individual job searches
  9. Be familiar with University policies and procedures relating to faculty, and assure that all requirements are met

2. Financial Management

  1. Prepare annual budget request
  2. Track expenditures and adhere to allocated budgets
  3. Be prepared to be accountable for budgetary decisions, and responsive to inquiries
  4. Be familiar with, and adhere to, University policies and procedures relating to the expenditure of University funds
  5. Oversee TA/TF requests and utilization
  6. Approve annual ancillary budget request, and see that expenditures adhere to the approved budget amount
  7. Manage department’s space allocation appropriately
  8. Assist with fundraising efforts whenever possible

3. Educational program management

  1. See that departmental course offerings meet the needs of both majors and non-majors
  2. Initiate and oversee joint efforts with other departments/programs
  3. Oversee departmental advising by faculty
  4. Oversee departmental recruitment and mentoring of graduate students
  5. Assure that effective TA/TF training is in place

4. Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI)

  1. Be familiar with, and adhere to, University policies and procedures relating to DEI, including Title IX, sexual misconduct, nondiscrimination, etc.
  2. Work to ensure that the department is welcoming and supportive of all faculty, students, and staff with a special effort towards ensuring that people who come from underrepresented groups or who are subject to marginalization due to their identity are included in all aspects of departmental life and are involved in decision making as appropriate to their role.    
  3. Oversee, encourage, and support departmental initiatives and activities that promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
