Two Dietrich School Faculty Memebers Are Named 2024 Dr. Larry E. Davis Black Excellence in the Academy Awardees

Several Dietrich School Faculty members have been named 2024 recipients of the Dr. Larry E. Davis Black Excellence in the Academy Awards. A dinner and awards ceremony will be held at the Heinz History Center on November 7 to honor all of the achievements, contributions, and leadership that the Black Faculty at the University has provided.

Sam Woolley Announced as AoIR 2024 Nancy Baym Book Award Winner

Dietrich School PhD Student Awarded NASA FINESST Fellowship

Gabriella Zuccolotto, a PhD Student in the Department of Geology and Environmental Science in the Dietrich School and a member of John Gardner's lab, was recently awarded a 3-year NASA FINESST fellowship. Zuccolotto will use remote sensing data from Landsat and Planet to build models of phycocyanin and chlorophyll to better understand harmful algal bloom dynamics in the Ohio and Illinois River Basins. 

Elizabeth Votruba-Drzal is the New Director of Pitt’s Learning Research and Development Center

The University of Pittsburgh has named Elizabeth Votruba-Drzal, the current Chair of the Department of Psychology in the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, as the next director of the Learning Research and Development Center (LRDC), effective Sept. 1.

Dean Adam Announces New Dean’s Fellow, Assistant Deans

Dear Colleagues,

One of my goals as Dean has been to create more leadership roles for faculty members at all ranks. Over the spring and summer, we posted, and interviewed candidates for, new Assistant Dean and Dean’s Fellow positions. The pool of candidates was outstanding and the choice was difficult, but we’re confident that these new colleagues will very quickly begin making a positive impact on the lives of our students and faculty.

The Deparment of Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies Recives the Mighty Oak Designation

The Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies is the first Dietrich School department to receive the Mighty Oak designation from the Office of Sustainability’s Green Suite Awards. A celebration of the recognition will take place in the William Pitt Union in the lower lounge on July 10 from 3-4:30.

CAAPP 2024 Book Prize Recipient Announced

The 2024 Center for African American Poetry and Poetics (CAAPP) Book Prize has been announced. Jasmine Reid received the prize for her manuscript, “Interlocutor Goddess.”  The manuscript will be published in 2025 by Autumn House Press.

Reid is also the author of Deus Ex Nigrum (2020) and a recipient of Cave Canem and Poets House fellowships. She has been published in the Academy of American Poets’ Poem-a-Day, Kenyon Review, Virginia Quarterly Review, and TriQuarterly. Reid is currently an assistant professor at the Pratt Institute.
